RF Cable and Waveguide Sweeping and Network Analysis

Goldspar utilizes the Hewlett-Packard Models 8757A Scalar Network Analyzer. When used in conjunction with a swept frequency generator and the appropriate sensors and directional couplers this analyzer can perform complex analysis of insertion and return loss with resolution of 1/100 of a decibel. It is possible to adjust filters, isolators and duplexers while simultaneously monitoring the return loss and the insertion loss of the device over a specified frequency range. This analyzer only recognizes the specially modulated and synchronized signal from the sweep generator so the system is immune to the spurious signals that distort tests with a spectrum analyzer. This is especially important in the radio site environment. In addition this analyzer has a dynamic range of 80 db and can measure signals as low as -60 dbm. Our sweep generator produces +20 dbm of output in order to take full advantage of the dynamic range of the analyzer. It can produce colored plots of either return loss or SWR.

Goldspar tries to utilize waveguide directional couplers at frequencies over 4 GHz. This results in a highly accurate test as it eliminates the significant errors introduced by coax to waveguide adapters. Also waveguide couplers have higher directivity which allow us to measure return losses in excess of 40 db.

Goldspar currently has the capability to make accurate measurements in either coaxial cable or waveguide at frequencies up to 18 GHz. We can also go as low as 400 KHz. Our sweep generator is functional up to 50 GHz. If you have a requirement to test a waveguide at frequencies between 18 and 50 GHz please give us a call. Be sure to specify the type of flange that we need to connect to. We can probably rent, borrow or purchase the additional items we would need and have them in hand within a few days.
